Hebrews 2:10-18 (Part 1)

Two ancient heresies:
-Doceticism - idea that Jesus only "seemed" to be human
-Apollinarianism - idea that the divine nature and mind enter the human body taking the place of a human nature and mind

-George Guthrie "Through the Incarnation God became an 'insider' not merely acting on our human predicament from without, but transforming it from within."

I. The suffering of the Son was appropriate for the accomplishment of salvation.
a. Through suffering the Son fully completed all required for salvation.
-author = archegos = leader, pioneer, champion
-perfect = teleioo = to complete, perfect, qualify
b. Through suffering the Son brings many sons (and daughters) to glory.

II. The Son willingly identified with humanity.
-Rom. 1:16
a. He became our sanctifier.
-sanctified = hagiazo = to set apart, sanctify, consecrate, make holy
-F.F. Bruce "For sanctification is glory begun, and glory is sanctification completed."
b. He established a spiritual family through His sacrificial death.
c. He modeled trust in God during suffering.
-put trust in = peitho = be persuaded, be convinced
d. He has possession of all who are sanctified in Him.
-John 17:6
