Hebrews 5:1-10 (Part 1)

I.  The high priest originated from among men.
-I Pet. 1:12
-(2:14) share in = koinoneo, perfect tense
-(2:14) partook = metecho, aorist tense
 
 II.  The high priest ministered in matters related to God.
-Lev. 16:15
 
III.  The high priest was to have compassion for the people.
-deal gently = metriopatheo =moderate one's feelings, have feelings in the right measure; compound of metreo = to measure and patheo
-beset = perikeimai = be surrounded by, encompassed by;
-Mark 9:42
-Ps. 49:7-8
-I Pet. 1:18-19
 
IV.  The high priest was appointed by God.
-appointed = kathistemi = to constitute, appoint, put in charge; present passive verb
-take = lambano = take, receive, take hold of, take away; present active verb

Matthew 15:21-28 Mother's Day

I.  Great faith responds positively to the amount of light it receives.
-Deut. 7:1-2
-cry out = krazo; imperfect verb tense
 
 II.  Great faith perseveres through obstacles.
-implore = erotao = ask, implore; imperfect verb tense
-Why didn't Jesus answer and then answer the way He did?
1) Jesus was assuring the disciples that He had not abandoned Israel.
2) Jesus is encouraging this mother to set her roots deep.
3) Jesus was demonstrating through this mother great faith.
 
  III.  Great faith remains humble before the Lord.
-to bow down = proskuneo = prostrate, bow down, worship; imperfect verb tense
 
 IV.  Great faith is commended by the Lord.
-II Tim. 4:7-8

Hebrews 4:14-16

I. Hold firmly to the confession of Christ.
-high priest = archeireus; arche = beginning, first, head or leader;
-iereus = priest;
-great = megas
-saying He is the great/great priest or the high/high priest
-hold fast = krateo = hold, hold fast, seize, take hold of
a. He is the Son of God.
b. He has passed through the heavens.
-has passed through = dierchomai; perfect tense verb
c. He is able to sympathize with our weakness.
-sympathize = sumpatheo = to share the experience with someone, to feel sympathy with; idea of sympathy that leads to action and active assistance.
-weakness = astheneia = weakness whether from sickness, physical weakness, or weakness related to temptation to sin or temptation to not persevere under persecution
d. He experienced temptation without committing sin.
-homoiotes = likeness, exact correspondence; NAB says "one who has been similarly tested". YLT "in all things in like manner."
-F.F. Bruce "Yet he endured triumphantly every form of testing that mankind could endure, without any weakening of His faith in God or any relaxation of His obedience to Him. Such endurance involves more, not less, than ordinary human suffering: sympathy with the sinner in his trial does not depend on the experience of sin but on the experience of the strength of the temptation to sin which only the sinless can know in its full intensity. He who falls yields before the last strain."

II. Draw near to the throne of grace.
-draw near = proserchomai; present tense verb
a. It is where we receive mercy.
b. It is where we find grace.
-time of need = eukairos = good time, convenient, well timed; idea of at the right time or moment
